Lead Teacher – Hawthorne Family Resource Center

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the following dynamic position:

Lead Teacher – Hawthorne Family Resource Center

 The Hawthorne Family Resource Center operates educational and family support programs at World and Achieve Academies in Oakland, California. The early childhood family school readiness program provides parents; with children ages 0-5, parenting education classes, support groups, advocacy, family literacy events, child development programs and Parent Center drop in services

A.  FUNCTION

  • The Lead Teacher works collaboratively with the Senior Coordinator and Hawthorne Family Resource Center team members to optimally meet the needs of the children and families served by the program.
  • The Lead Teacher creates a nurturing learning environment for both the children and the parents who will be interacting with the children to develop their skills of being their child’s first and best teacher. 
  • The Lead Teacher provides oversight of the teaching assistants and the program milieu including planning and coordination of the daily activities, setting up the learning environment, modeling best ECE practices, and providing training while interacting with parents, implementing program policies and overseeing all aspects of the daily routine.


B. QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master Teacher Child Development Permit including 24 units ECE, 16 units GE, and Adult Supervision And Infant/Toddler Coursework preferred 
  • 3 years teaching experience in a Early Childhood Education Program (Infant/Toddler Program) with experience in a Parent Co-op or program with active parent participation highly desirable.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team in a diverse environment 
  • Ability to provide strong leadership 
  • Fluently bilingual English/Spanish required
 C.  RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan, facilitate, and supervise group and individual activities, transitions between activities, and all aspects of the daily routine with a strong base of understanding that the children’s work and learning is through play. 
  • Manage staff coverage, making changes as needed in break-times, etc. to maintain staffing levels that best promote a safe and smooth operation; while directing staff and parents to observe and interact with the children.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Coordinator, facilitate the training of new staff. Document daily progress notes on assigned children and complete documentation responsibilities for teachers who are absent.
  • Provide oversight of program curriculum, including weekly meetings with the teachers/HFRC team to review activities, ensuring that program appropriately match the children’s developmental and mental health needs, and ensuring that weekly lesson plans are documented and posted.
  • Monitor and train the assistant teachers and parents. This includes individual meetings and small group meetings, as necessary and ongoing collaboration.
  • Facilitate the smooth functioning of the program regarding maintaining cleanliness, including the oversight and completion of daily and weekly clean-up tasks. This includes, but is not limited to: maintaining a clean and safe kitchen and milieu, including all areas accessible to the children, assuring compliance with all Community Care Licensing Health and Safety regulations (e.g., assuring all chemical products are locked up and not accessible to the children, and outlets are blocked with safety blockers).
  • Manage program supply requests from teaching/mental health counseling team; shop for supplies as approved by Program Director and distribute and/or store as appropriate. 
  • Enact outreach with community programs and professionals to increase numbers of referrals, as needed.
  • Manage sign-in/sign-out files, complete daily attendance recordings and submit reports to the Senior Coordinator.
  • Communicate and plan with Senior Coordinator regarding parent meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned. 
D. WORKING CONDITIONS and JOB SETTING
  • Work is primarily in an office / school setting with children or youth.
  • Headquarters is a multi-story building with stairs for access to other floors as needed.
  • Because work is directly with children, full mobility is required for standing, walking, sitting, using hands, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • May need to use child-size chairs for sitting.
  • Regular driving may be required.
  • Periodic lifting up to 25 pounds is required.
  • Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 12:30pm and/or 3:00pm to 5:00pm
