Senior Ranger/Naturalist

THE POSITION
The Senior Ranger/Naturalist prioritizes, delegates, assigns, directs and reviews the work of Rangers, Attendants, contractors and others on an assigned shift; performs general maintenance related to the operation, development and conservation of East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) watershed, fisheries and wildlife and outdoor recreation properties; and assists visitors. Responsibilities include:
Lead
  • Prioritizing, assigning, directing and reviewing the work of others in the construction, maintenance and operation of recreation facilities.
  • Evaluating, interpreting and enforcing recreation protocols to other rangers and general public.
  • Scheduling staff assignments in supervisor's absence.
  • Prioritizing projects, equitablydividing workload; ensuring that required training such as CPR, fire refresher and hazmat is up-to-date; and creating daily work list for staff.
  • Training new employees.
  • Preparing, reviewing, analyzing and recommending action on routine and specialized documents including leases, incident reports, watershed entry permits, daily and weekly tally sheets, purchase orders, reconciling products received, receipt and payments; and monthly dam inspection reports and fuelwood permits.
Administrative
  • Monitoring agreements with local fire and law enforcement agencies, cooperating with fire inspection and prevention programs.
  • Maintaining accurate records.
  • Assisting with long range planning activities.
  • Processing any new watershed use requests including CEQA issues.
Maintenance
  •  Performing general watershed and recreation management duties including range management, fire mitigation and fuel break construction, park operations and maintenance, erosion control, trail maintenance and construction; forestry including identifying and felling diseased or dangerous trees; sign installation; landscaping; integrated pest management including chemical application for weed, insect and rodent control; and residential property management including creating/modifying park rules and regulations, inspections, inventories, communications with contractors and residents, etc.
Emergency Response
  • Fighting grass, brush and forest fires.
  • Responding to medical, safety, water and other emergencies within the watershed and recreations areas.
  • Assisting and cooperating with law enforcement and other agencies during routine operations and emergencies.
Public Contact
  • Answering visitor inquiries; interpreting and explaining natural and historic features of the area; conducting tours and securing visitors' and residents’ cooperation in adhering to its rules and regulations; and calling for assistance if cooperation cannot be secured.
  • Instructing visitors in safe boating practices and directing or performing search and rescue duties, first aid administration and other emergency situations.
Working conditions include a field environment; working closely with the public; wearing uniforms; exposure to inclement weather conditions and where fire, insects, plants and animals are potential hazards.

REQUIREMENTS
A typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge, skills and abilities is:
  1. High school diploma or its equivalent.
  2. Two years* experience in maintenance and operations work in recreation, fisheries and wildlife, or range and forestry at a level equivalent to or higher than an EBMUD Ranger/Naturalist II.
  3. Willingness to work shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime.
  4. First Aid and CPR certification.
  5. California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  6. Physical ability to swim for self-preservation and to learn and perform lifesaving techniques, take boats out of water and drag fire hose up a hill.
  7. An AA or Bachelor's degree in a related field can substitute for six months of the required experience.
