Instrument Technician

THE POSITION
Instrument Technicians install, inspect, maintain and repair metering and recording instruments, controllers, data logging and display equipment and communications and telemetering systems in an industrial environment.

Typical duties include:
  • Installing, maintaining, repairing, overhauling, calibrating, and testing a wide variety of electronic recording, indicating, controlling, pneumatic and telemetering and test instruments.
  • Installing, maintaining, repairing, overhauling, calibrating, and testing controls and control systems, including distributed control system (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), programmable automation controller (PAC) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).
  • Installing and troubleshooting communications systems and networks, both wired and wireless.
  • Developing and modifying PLC programs.
  • Developing and modifying DCS and other human machine interface (HMI) screens.
  • Utilizing vendor manuals and drawings to setup and maintain complex instruments.
  • Performing periodic preventive maintenance and making inspections.
  • Troubleshooting systems, equipment and instrumentation to diagnose problems.
  • Reading and interpreting wiring diagrams, schematics, mechanical drawings, piping/process & instrument diagrams (P&IDs), and specifications .
  • Ensuring proper safety precautions are followed.
  • Estimating labor, materials and supplies necessary to perform specific assignments.
  • Keeping records and making oral and written reports of work performed.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • Excellent skills and experience installing, inspecting, maintaining and repairing a wide variety of instruments, equipment and systems in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to continuously learn new technologies.

REQUIREMENTS
A typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge, skills and abilities is:
  1. High school diploma or its equivalent and
  2. Option 1 or 2
    1. Four years of experience performing skilled work in electronic circuitry, electromechanical, pneumatic, and mechanical repair, at least two years of which involved field work on instrumentation and process controls, Or
    2. 16 months of experience as an EBMUD Instrument Worker III, including satisfactory completion of the appropriate courses and advanced on-the-job training as specified in the Maintenance Trades Training Program (employees only).
  3. Valid California driver license and satisfactory driving record.
  4. Physical ability to perform both the field and office aspects of the job, including sufficient strength to lift supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds, carry and hold items weighing up to 50 pounds, agility and stamina sufficient to walk up extended stairs and ladders and senses and dexterity to recognize unusual equipment activity, to read schematics and electronic component markings, connect wires and use test equipment where a variety of weather conditions, heights and confined spaces are factors.
  5. Willingness to work shifts or overtime as needed.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The initial monthly salary for Instrument Technician is $6,557 up to $7,590.
